VERKKO: network for safer and greener digital traffic management
VERKKO, the European network for improved sustainable digital traffic management, including inter-modal freight and cross-border mobility improvements, brings together 40 partners from 12 European countries to build a network of ITS and Cooperative-ITS (C-ITS) implementations and digital infrastructure.
The objective is to harmonise and modernise transport infrastructure on the Core, Extended Core, Comprehensive TEN-T network and Urban Nodes.
Sharing knowledge
As part of its international strategy, Rijkswaterstaat has decided to collaborate on cross-border networks and sharing know-how from these networks, coupled with their digitisation. VERKKO is a perfect fit in that respect.
VERKKO is a subsidised project to which Rijkswaterstaat and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management have contributed a number of innovative projects, such as RoMo 2.0, C4Safety and CHARM. This gives us an ideal opportunity to share our knowledge with the rest of Europe, but also to take on board good ideas and practices from those countries.
Sharing ideas and standards in the digital domain of road traffic means that road users can travel seamlessly from A to B within Europe. VERKKO focuses on multi-modal transport systems, so travellers have a wider and, presumably, more sustainable choice, too.
