TRITON: Improve policy insTRuments marine sITes of cOmmunity importaNce

The TRITON project is aimed at improving the management and effectiveness of the marine Natura 2000 areas in the European Union. By exchanging know-how and experiences between countries, TRITON’s objective is to contribute to a more robust management of protected marine sites.

TRITON will address the urgent need for improving policy tools and operational frameworks relating to the management of sites of common interest (SCIs), special areas of conservation (SACs) and marine protection areas (MPAs). The project’s remit is to support in the fine-tuning of these tools by:

  • sharing know-how
  • identifying and propagating best practices
  • providing management authorities and stakeholders with the competences to implement effective solutions.

Six organisations representing different countries in Europe are participating in TRITON, each acting within its own geographic and legal context, and each with the common objective of protecting vulnerable marine ecosystems.

The project is being coordinated by the Management Consortium of Torre Guaceto in Italy. Project partners are based in Lithuania, Montenegro, Romania, Spain and the Netherlands. The Netherlands is represented by Rijkswaterstaat Zee and Delta.

Phased approach

The project will run for a period of four years, adopting a phased approach. The first three years will be devoted to the design and implementation of improved policy measures in close cooperation with local and regional stakeholders. The final year will focus on assessing how effectively these changes work in the long term and what the consequences are for the organisation.

Sharing good practices

TRITON offers a unique opportunity to stimulate dialogue between the organisations, to learn from each other and to share good practices. Moreover, this will help bring about the creation of more lasting relationships in the field of marine nature conservation.
