COMEX² - Smarter management of European waterways
COMEX² is a European project that develops and enhances River Information Services (RIS) through the EuRIS platform. The aim of COMEX² is to further harmonise RIS across European waterways. The project also aims to improve predictability in inland navigation and increase transparency in the transport sector.
The EuRIS platform was developed as part of the first COMEX project and launched in September 2022 by 13 European fairway authorities. It provides 24/7 access to both static and real-time information on Europe’s interconnected inland waterway network.
Rijkswaterstaat contributes to COMEX² to support European cooperation in inland navigation and to improve the efficiency, safety and sustainability of transport corridors. River Information Services (RIS) play a key role in this by enabling better planning, reducing delays and supporting more reliable logistics.
In COMEX², EuRIS will be further expanded in terms of functionality, services and geographical coverage.
Further development of EuRIS
COMEX² focuses on improving both the functionality and usability of the EuRIS platform. This includes a redesign of the route and voyage planners, continuous improvements in data quality, and the addition of features such as downloadable IENC charts.
Stakeholders and end users are closely involved to ensure the platform meets their needs. Their input directly informs ongoing development.
In parallel, the project strengthens the interconnection and integration of electronic reporting systems. This helps reduce administrative burdens and supports the ‘report once’ principle in European inland waterway transport.
More efficient and sustainable inland navigation
COMEX² contributes to a more efficient and reliable inland waterway transport system. By improving data availability and coordination, it supports better planning and smoother operations across Europe. This leads to reduced administrative burden, improved logistics performance and a shift towards more sustainable transport modes. In turn, this contributes to lower emissions and stronger economic performance within the sector.
