Rijkswaterstaat has traditionally played a role in improving the living environment. As manager of the road and inland waterway networks and the water system, Rijkswaterstaat performs important tasks in relation to the environment, such as containing blue algae and cleaning the beds of rivers and lakes, but also constructing nature-friendly river banks, ecoducts and wildlife tunnels.
Rijkswaterstaat performs all of the executive tasks relating to the environment and the quality of life for the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, but also implements programmes for other clients, including local authorities and other ministries.
You will find detailed information about the themes covered by Rijkswaterstaat and its programmes on the page Environment.
