Switzerland joins EuRIS, completing Rhine coverage
Switzerland has officially joined EuRIS, the European information portal for inland navigation. This expansion means that the entire Rhine is now covered by EuRIS, an important step towards safer, more efficient and more transparent inland shipping on one of key transport corridors. Rijkswaterstaat played a central role in enabling this development.
Full Rhine corridor now available in EuRIS
During the EuRIS Council meeting in Basel on 12 - 13 May 2026, the Port of Switzerland signed the European Corridor Management Agreement (ECMA). This made Switzerland an official member of the EuRIS consortium. In the coming months, Swiss waterway data will be added to the EuRIS portal, giving skippers and logistics partners access to up‑to‑date information for the entire Rhine.
Florian Röthlingshöfer, Director of the Swiss Rhine Ports, highlighted the importance of this step: ‘By joining EuRIS, Switzerland strengthens its integration into the European inland waterway network. Transparent, reliable and harmonised information is essential for efficient and safe navigation.’
Rijkswaterstaat’s role
Rijkswaterstaat represents the Netherlands in the EuRIS consortium and actively contributes to international cooperation within the COMEX2 project. COMEX2 focuses on:
- further developing the EuRIS platform
- expanding the system with new services
- improving user experience and data quality
- supporting new countries in joining the consortium
Led by Iris Reuselaars (Rijkswaterstaat), the COMEX2 team coordinated the negotiations with Switzerland. As Switzerland is not an EU Member State, the process required extensive discussions on governance, financial contributions and data protection.
Reuselaars: 'The expansion into Switzerland is excellent news for waterway users. I'm immensely proud that we now provide waterway information in collaboration with so many European countries.' Peter Oudenes, who is responsible within COMEX2 for onboarding new member states, describes Switzerland’s accession as ‘a major step forward’.
About EuRIS
EuRIS was launched in 2022 by 13 European countries and provides access to static and dynamic information on more than 27,000 kilometres of European inland waterways. The portal provides skippers and logistics partners with:
- real‑time traffic information
- waiting times and closures
- route and voyage planning
- waterway characteristics
By integrating national River Information Services (RIS), EuRIS contributes to safer and more efficient inland navigation.
Further expansion planned
Switzerland is the first country to join EuRIS under COMEX2. Poland is expected to follow, while exploratory discussions have already taken place with Moldova and Ukraine.
