RESUREXION: Development of a multilevel REsilience Strategy for Urban areas and River basins to EXtreme weather conditIONs

RESUREXION aims at enhancing existing policy instruments at different levels and sectors, that influence water management in urban and catchment areas to contribute to a robust climate resilience against extreme weather events, including floods and droughts.

Advancing international climate resilience

Rijkswaterstaat operates internationally driven by the understanding that water systems, transport networks, and environmental challenges transcend national borders. RESUREXION directly supports this vision by fostering interregional cooperation to address the shared risks posed by extreme weather events in urban and river catchment areas.

By enhancing cross-border collaboration, the project contributes to developing more effective and efficient solutions that respect the interconnected nature of European water and environmental systems.

Furthermore, RESUREXION aligns with the international frameworks that guide Rijkswaterstaat’s work. It strengthens policy instruments in line with European directives and global agreements such as the Paris Climate Accord and the Sustainable Development Goals, helping Rijkswaterstaat proactively implement and comply with these important regulations.

As a knowledge-driven organisation in a small but globally connected country, we benefit significantly from RESUREXION’s emphasis on exchanging expertise and innovation among diverse European partners. This platform enables us to access cutting-edge knowledge and best practices, enhancing its capacity to develop resilient, climate-adaptive water management strategies.

Finally, through RESUREXION, we advance its international mission, building resilient, sustainable water and environmental systems that respond effectively to the growing challenges of climate change and extreme weather events.

Diverse thematic elements

Diverse thematic crucial policy elements to be addressed are:

  • adherence to strategic climate resilience strategies in place to minimize risks and maximize benefits
  • increase the openness for green infrastructure and Nature-based Solutions
  • improve practicability of policy implementation
  • management of water demand and supply in both quality and quantity
  • scenarios for preparedness and protective measures
  • education, skill & capacity development.

Objective

The overall objective is to improve practicability, effectiveness, and efficiency. This comprises a ‘practicability and interconnectivity check’ and creates a synergetic policy system empowering urban and catchment areas towards robust climate resilience.
