Temporary ban on lorries and coaches on the Merwede Bridge (A27)

The measure was introduced for safety reasons. Investigations have shown that the steel in parts of the bridge’s arch structure is weaker than previously assumed. By banning lorries and coaches, the bridge can remain open to other traffic. Further investigations into the Merwede Bridge are under way.

Diversion routes

Lorries and coaches are being diverted via the A15–A16–A59 or the A15–A2–A59. Vehicles carrying dangerous goods must use the route via the A2. Please allow extra travel time if using these diversion routes.

Traffic measures and enforcement

Rijkswaterstaat is enforcing the ban on lorries and coaches. To ensure road users are aware of the ban well in advance, we have put additional signage in place, along with other traffic measures.

The ban is enforced using cameras and through roadside checks, including checks on foreign drivers.

Fewer lorries and coaches on the bridge

Since the ban was introduced, we have seen a significant reduction in the number of lorries and coaches using the Merwede Bridge near Gorinchem. We continue to urge drivers and transport operators not to use the bridge. 

Every lorry and coach that crosses the bridge places additional strain on the structure. The fewer lorries and coaches that use the bridge, the less strain is placed on it. Every violation is one too many.

The ban is a far-reaching but necessary measure. We understand that it has significant consequences for hauliers, businesses and other road users. We would therefore like to thank everyone who is complying with the ban.
