Phytoplankton measurements in greater depth in the German/Dutch Wadden Sea

The coastal waters of many European countries are fighting the problem of eutrophication: enrichment of the soil leads to an increase in algae and plants that is so steep that it is leading to a decline in biodiversity. An important indicator of eutrophication is the presence of phytoplankton. The aim of this project is study phytoplankton in greater depth, in order to be able to determine the amount of phytoplankton in the Wadden Sea accurately.

This will ultimately make a contribution to better understanding of eutrophication in this area. This knowledge will make it easier to fight the phenomenon. Eutrophication has several adverse effects. These include disagreeable odours, overfertilisation and a decrease in biodiversity.

Research results assessment phytoplankton

However, the assessment of phytoplankton in the coastal waters of the German/Dutch Wadden Sea has not yet really led to any satisfactory results. On the basis of these insights it may ultimately be possible to develop better methods to tackle the issue of eutrophication in the Wadden Sea. This project will also lead to closer collaboration between German and Dutch government agencies and research institutes. This will boost the sharing of knowledge and the formulation of common policy, for instance to fight nutrient enrichment in the area. Moreover, the results of the research may make a contribution to a tighter EU Water Framework Directive and better understanding of the Wadden Sea.
