Expertise

Our comprehensive approach allows us to share, co-create and deploy the knowledge needed to ensure safe, sustainable and efficient infrastructure.

Our areas of expertise

Climate adaptation

Rijkswaterstaat is spearheading climate adaptation initiatives to ensure resilience against rising sea levels and extreme weather events.

Sustainability

Our expertise in sustainability revolves around 3 main pillars: energy and climate, the circular economy and sustainable land use.

Digitalisation

We are creating, collecting and using more and more data. The responsibility to manage this data is immense.

Asset management

In the coming years, (parts of) hundreds of bridges and locks, tunnels, storm surge barriers and line elements will need to be replaced and/or renovated.

Network governance

Network governance emphasises international cooperation and coordination, for example in water protection, shipping, and roads.

Corridor management and smart mobility

Interrelated disciplines focused on improving transport systems through cooperation and technological advancement.

Water

There are 3 main areas of focus: flood safety, water management (including droughts) and water quality/ecology.
