International cooperation
Like any other government agency in and outside Europe, Rijkswaterstaat is facing challenges to accommodate increased traffic growth, minimise congestion, maintain services in the face of increasing climate change effects, as well as deliver on environmental and societal objectives.
Cooperation with other countries
Our knowledge for roads, waterways and water systems does not come to us on its own. Internationally, we co-operate with sister organisations, universities and a large number of European and overseas authorities and government agencies. Rijkswaterstaat takes part in several European research programmes.

International projects outside EU
Ever since a first letter of intent with the Department of Transport in the early 1970s, we have cooperated with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in the US on several matters and still do.
The same goes for Japan on Intelligent Transportation Society (ITS)matters and more recently with Panama mainly on project management of large scale projects.
Information for students
ITS Edulab is the Dutch traffic and transport laboratory for students. In ITS Edulab, university students solve traffic related issues with short-term research for Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch motorway operator. In this way, the institute connects real-life, operational topics with scientific research. It offers useful, practical knowledge to Rijkswaterstaat, and interesting master projects to students.
The ECTRI Young Researchers Seminar 2013 will take place in Lyon June 5-7. The YRS 2011 took place in Copenhagen, Denmark on 8-10 June 2011.
The Transport Research Arena (TRA) Young Researchers competition 2012 has taken place in Athens, Greece on the 22nd April 2012 to the 26th April 2012.
